Stewart & Spahr Share Golfer of the Month Accolades
Date Posted: 10/5/2006
MACON, Ga. – Jacksonville’s Duncan Stewart and Campbell’s Kyle Spahr combined to earn medalist honors three times on their way to sharing A-Sun Golfer of the Month honors.
Stewart picked up where he left off last season, winning his first two tournaments of the year. The senior has now won four straight regular season individual titles dating back to last year’s El Diablo Intercollegiate. Just the third back-to-back A-Sun Champion, Stewart has been under par in four of the five rounds he has played this year. His play has helped lift the Dolphins to two team titles to open the 2006-07 season – including a 14-shot win over crosstown rival North Florida in the Sanctuary Cove Preview over the Labor Day holiday. During his streak of four individual titles, Stewart has won two in sudden death playoffs, the latest coming in a three-man playoff with Stewart sinking a 45-foot birdie on the third hole to win. His two wins are one away from tying the school record of three, which the Moray Shire, Scotland native tied last year. Stewart currently holds the school’s best career stroke average since 1993 at 72.92, ahead of teammates Russell Knox’s 73.11. With his two titles this season, Stewart continues to set the school record for most career wins which he holds now with seven in his career. He majors in Business.
Spahr was the number-one ranked player in the country among individuals in the Sept. 18 Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index while leading Campbell to the number-one spot in the same team listing. On Sept. 25, Spahr still ranked 24th nationally in the poll. The native of Mundelein, Ill., won the Hartford Hawks Invitational at 15-under-par 201 (66-65-70) on the par-72, 6944-yard layout at The International’s Oak Course. The season-opening victory was also the senior’s first collegiate individual title. Spahr, who tied a course record with a second-round 65, played the tournament’s par-5 holes at 11-under, while recording three eagles, one double eagle and 12 birdies during the event. His 201 tied a school 54-hole record set by Simon Dunn at the UCF Rio Pinar Intercollegiate in Oct. 2001. Spahr’s 65 was one shot off the school Division I era record for a single round (also set by Dunn at Rio Pinar). Campbell won the team trophy at Hartford by four strokes over second-place San Francisco. The Fighting Camels finished the event 8-under as a team after setting a school team record for lowest 36-hole total (562) in the process. One day after the year’s first Golfweek rankings were released on Sept. 18, Campbell finished second at the Bowling Green John Piper Intercollegiate. Spahr finished third among individuals in the event at even-par 144 (74-70). Ten days after winning his first collegiate tournament, Spahr was four-under on par-5 holes and even on the par threes while notching six birdies. Through two events this season, Spahr’s stroke average stands at 69.0 over five rounds. He majors in Trust Management.
