Record Round Hands Jacksonville Lou McCullough Trophy

ORLANDO, Fla. – Jacksonville fired a school record 277 in the final round of the Atlantic Sun Men’s Golf Championship to win their first-ever Lou McCullough Trophy at Eagle Creek Golf Club. Junior Duncan Stewart defended his individual title after a birdie on the second playoff hole carried him past teammate Russel Knox.
The Dolphins entered the day with a three-stroke advantage and punished the course on their way to setting several conference records. The duo of Knox and Stewart each posted 54-hole totals of 13-under par 206, the lowest rounds versus par in A-Sun history. However, the play of the other team members was also key in the title run. Jamie Kennedy shot a five-under par 68 to finish tied for fifth while Matt Kleinrock and Christian Martin each added par scores in one of the final two rounds. It seemed to be Jacksonville’s day after Kennedy knocked in a sand wedge from 100 yards out for an eagle on the third hole and Stewart one-hopped a five-iron into the cup for an ace on the 205-yard, fifth hole.
JU’s River City rival UNF made a strong push in the final round, but fell five strokes shy in the team standings to finish runner-up for the second straight season. Miguel Ordonez carded the round of the championship on Wednesday with his six-under par 67, which featured only one score higher than a four. Favorite ETSU came in third with both Jordan Findlay and Rhys Davies earning All-Tournament honors.
Stewart becomes just the third player in conference history to defend his title, joining Josh Broadaway (1999-2000) and Hal Sutton (1979-80). The Moray Shire, Scotland native has won two straight titles heading into NCAA Regional play. The Dolphins will now wait until May 18-20 to return to the links at the NCAA Regionals.
The 11-member league headquartered in Macon, Ga., consists of Belmont, Campbell, ETSU, Florida Atlantic, Gardner-Webb, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, North Florida and Stetson.
