Stetson Men set Records in Season-Opening Victory
|

Sunset Beach, N.C. - Redshirt freshman Micah Jacobsen (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) shot four under par 68 in today's final round to key the Stetson men's golf team to a five-stroke victory in the Elon University Sea Trail Intercollegiate on Sunday. Jacobsen and sophomore Sam Ryder (Longwood, Fla.) tied for second place individually. Stetson's 841 three-day total and -23 score are both school records.
Stetson's four under par 284 was the second-lowest score of the day and allowed it to break a 36-hole tie with Wofford, which placed second at 18 under par on the weekend. The previous program record for 54-hole tournament score was 862 (-2), set at the Tampa Invitational back in February 1991.
The Hatters used three scores of even par or better today to sprint to the finish on the Jones Course at Sea Trail Resort. Ryder carded a 71 and junior Gabe Costa (Tequesta, Fla.) posted even par 72 in addition to the Jacobsen 68. Senior Dave McAndrew (Barrington, R.I.) had the final Hatter counting score with a 73 while junior Alex Jestings (Providence, R.I.) finished strong as well with a 78. McAndrew tied for fifth place overall at -5 while Costa tied for 10th place at four under par.
Wofford's Mark Joye, the 36-hole leader, used an even par 72 today to hold on and win the individual title by a single stroke over Jacobsen and Ryder. Marshall Tinsley (George Mason) finished fourth at six under; McAndrew and four other golfers tied at -5.
