TALLAHASSEE, Fla./Charlotte, N.C. - Three-time defending A-Sun Champion Gilbert Kemboi of USC Upstate and Kennesaw State senior standout Nabil Hamid both claimed spots in the NCAA National Championship after top-10 finishes at their respective Regional events.
Competing in the Southeast Regional in Charlotte, N.C., Kemboi ran 29:47.31 to finish sixth overall and grab the final individual automatic qualifying slot. He also earns All-Region honors for his efforts.
In Tallahassee, Hamid placed seventh overall at the NCAA South Regional to earn a spot in the National Championship for the second straight year. Overall, seven A-Sun harriers posted top-40 finishes to shine at the South Regional.
Hamid completed the 10K course in 30:43.0, becoming one of just four runners not from Florida State, Georgia or Florida to crack the top-20. The senior earned his spot in the nationals later this month by being one of the top four finishers not on either regional champ Florida State or runner-up Georgia. His teammate Natan Reuter placed 18th overall and if third place team finisher Florida receives one of 13 at-large berths into the nationals, then he would jump into the top four category as well. Both Hamid and Reuter earned All-Region accolades.
The entire field will be announced mid-day on Saturday.
ETSU posted an impressive seventh place showing, just a few points from cracking into the top-five. Four runners placed in the top-55 individually, led by Filip Jalovy who landed 26th in a time of 31:29.6, just seven seconds shy of joining the All-Region team.
A pair of Mercer runners broke to the top-40 as Lukas Steinheber (36th) and Jacob Law (39th) helped the Bears to a 12th place showing.
The NCAA National Championship will be Saturday, November 17 hosted by the University of Louisville at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park.
