2/25/2008 - MEN'S BASKETBALL
Weekly Team Notes
|

Belmont
* After making 10 or more three-point field goals in 10 straight games from Dec. 19 through Jan. 26, Belmont Basketball has made fewer than 10 three-point field goals in five of its last seven games. The Bruins went 9-for-30 in Friday night’s 75-64 victory over Lipscomb.
* The Bruins have committed 10 or fewer turnovers in four of their last six games. This includes nine turnovers committed Friday night versus Lipscomb.
* Belmont has done an outstanding job on the boards of late, having not been outrebounded since Jan. 12 at Lipscomb – a stretch of 11 games.
* Junior Matthew Dotson is 15-for-30 (.500) from three-point range over his last five games.
* Belmont plays host to Campbell Thursday and Gardner-Webb Saturday.
Campbell
* Campbell plays its final men’s basketball game at 55-year old Carter Gym on Monday against ETSU. With the opening of the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center and Gilbert Craig Gore Arena scheduled for next fall, the Fighting Camels will end nearly a six-decade run in “cozy” Carter.
* In addition, Monday’s contest marks the final home playing appearance for two Fighting Camel seniors -- Jake Wohlfeil and Reggie Bishop, who rank fifth and seventh, respectively, among the school’s career 3-point field goals made leaders and have played key roles in the program’s resurgence. For the first time since 1996-98, Campbell has posted double-figure wins totals in 3-straight years.
* Jonathan Rodriguez leads the A-Sun and ranks 19th nationally in scoring (21.2). He has scored in double figures in 34-straight games and has already set school records for free throws made (176) and attempted (231) in a season.
East Tennessee State
* No notes provided.
Florida Gulf Coast
* Rob Quaintance moved into 25th place for steals in a season in the A-Sun. The senior from Glendale now has 71 for the season. His seven steals at Stetson matched a league-high this season.
* Adam Liddell returned after missing 11 games with an eye injury.
* Casey Wohlleb has scored over 20 points in three straight games.
Gardner-Webb
* Gardner-Webb’s Grayson Flittner was “en fuego” in two games for GWU last week, averaging a league-best 26.5 points and shooting a sizzling 15-of-20 from three-point range in two games. He narrowly missed a single-game record for GWU by hitting 9-of-12 from deep in the win over ETSU. Followed that by going 6-for-8 from deep vs. USC Upstate. Flittner has made 94 treys - 13 shy of the A-Sun single-season record (Eric Smith, Campbell).
* Gardner-Webb is averaging a win margin of 19.2 points per game during its current five-game league win streak. GWU has led by at least 27 points in four of those five wins at some point during the second half.
* Thomas Sanders’ 18 double-doubles are more than any other player in a single A-Sun season since 1996-1997. Belmont’s Adam Sonn is next with 17 (2002-2003). Only Michael Beasley (Kansas State) and Jon Brockman (Washington) have more than Sanders.
Jacksonville
* The Dolphins clinched their second straight winning season. It is the first time since the 2000-01 campaign that JU has recorded back-to-back winning seasons and it is just the fourth time that has occurred in the past 20 years.
* For the second straight year JU has pulled out of a slow start to record a winning record. Last year, JU opened 4-8 but finished 15-14. This year’s squad started 3-8, recording an eight-game losing streak, before bouncing back. It marks the first time in school history that JU has recorded a losing streak of at least eight and finished with a winning record.
* Marcus Allen has seven 20-point efforts in the last nine games. He needs 76 points to become the 24th member of JU’s 1,000-point club.
* Ben Smith’s 24 point effort against Kennesaw State was his fourth 20-point night of the season and gives him double figures in scoring for the 23rd time in JU’s 26 games.
Kennesaw State
* The Owls picked up their first road win of the year when they knocked off UNF on Thursday. Kennesaw State went 1-1 for the week, losing to Jacksonville on Saturday costing the Owls at chance at their third straight .500 season in A-Sun play.
* Shuan Stegall picked up back-to-back double- doubles and now has posted three straight double-double games. The senior scored 19 and grabbed 13 rebounds against Jacksonville and scored 13 with 10 rebounds against UNF.
* Ronell Wooten scored 22 points against Jacksonville and in the process became the second Kennesaw State player to eclipse the 1,600-point mark. Wooten started play with 1,597 points and now stands at 1,619.
* Freshman Kelvin McConnell scored a careerhigh 20 points against JU, going 6-for-10 from the field including 5-of-7 on three pointers.
Lipscomb
* Freshman point guard Josh Slater scored a game-high 16 points in the loss at Belmont Saturday, his third game in a two to lead the Bisons in scoring. It was his 12th game to score in double figures. He has led the Bisons in rebounding in three of the last four games.
* Freshman center Adnan Hodzic scored 10 points at Belmont and narrowly missed his second double-double with nine rebounds, a game-high. He has scored in double figures in his last five games.
* Senior forward Eddie Ard leads the Bisons with 421 points this season. He scored 14 at Belmont, his 18th game in double figures this season.
Mercer
* No notes provided.
UNF
* The Ospreys bid farewell to three seniors in their final home game last Saturday – James Grimball, Chris Timberlake and Jonson Yousefzadeh
* Grimball recorded his 14th career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds
* UNF will close its season with road games at Stetson on Thursday and Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday.
USC Upstate
* USC Upstate snapped a four game losing streak with a dominating performance at Campbell last Thursday night. Upstate claimed a 79-58 victory over the Fighting Camels as Luke Payne led the way with 22 points.
* The Spartans dropped its final road game of the season Saturday at Gardner-Webb. Josh Chavis led the way with 17 points as the only Upstate player in double figures. He scored 15 straight points for the Spartans in the first half, leading Upstate to a nine-point advantage. However, the Bulldogs took a nine-point lead at halftime and the Spartans never threatened in the second half. Payne led the team last week, averaging 15.5 points per game.
* Upstate plays its final game of the season, its first in NCAA Division I and the A-Sun, Saturday when East Tennessee State comes to the Hodge Center. Seniors Luke Payne and Jeremy Byrd will be honored prior to Saturday’s game.
Stetson
* The Hatters split two home games losing to Savannah State 63-60 and defeating Florida Gulf Coast 69-66 in OT on Saturday. On Tuesday, Stetson played without leading scorer and rebounder Garfield Blair. Blair sustained an injury to his sternum in the final moments of the team’s win a Mercer the week before. Point guard A.J. Smith took it upon himself to lead the team. He scored 18 points in 27 minutes of play before having to leave the game due to an injury to his foot.
* Saturday against Florida Gulf Coast, both players were back on the fl oor, yet not at 100%. Junior guard Kris Thomas scored a team-high 18 points shooting a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from 3-point range.
* Stetson will finish up its regular season this week by hosting UNF on Thursday and Jacksonville on Saturday. Saturday will be senior night in the Edmunds Center with the Hatters honoring their lone senior J.J. Hirst prior to tip off.
