Saturday, February 17, 2007

MACON, Ga. – Following a review of the game-ending activity in Jacksonville University’s overtime win over Mercer last night, the Conference Office has issued one-game suspensions to Mercer’s James Florence and to Jacksonville’s Tyrone Curnell. Public reprimands for Mercer’s Hrvoje Pervan and Shaddean Aaron, along with JU’s Derek Duggins were also included in disciplinary action taken.

Pursuant to the A-Sun policy on unsporting behavior, Mercer’s Florence received his suspension for a flagrant unsporting act which precipitated a post-game confrontation involving both teams. He will serve his suspension in Mercer’s Sunday afternoon contest at home against North Florida. Curnell received his suspension for persistent provocative and aggressive unsporting behavior which prolonged the confrontation. He will sit out this Sunday when his teammates take on Stetson in DeLand.

“As with any incident of this nature, we’ve received the post-game reports and reviewed all the available game film,” said Commissioner Ted Gumbart. “While it is regrettable that any confrontation should occur, the proactive intervention of both coaching staffs, as well as players, was instrumental in controlling the situation and preventing any escalation. They should rightfully be commended for their role in restraining and separating their teams, allowing the floor to be cleared without further incident.”

The players receiving reprimands will also be placed on probation for the remainder of the season. The reprimands were issued for unsporting behavior which prolonged the confrontation.
