JU's Season Ends with Loss to Miami

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - Defensive mistakes put the Dolphins in an early hole and the bats could not come to the rescue as the JU baseball team was eliminated with a 4-0 loss to No. 17 Miami, Sunday afternoon in the third day of the NCAA Gainesville Regional at McKethan Stadium.
JU (37-22) has its season come to an end after earning its third regional appearance in the last three years. The Dolphins earned its first win in the postseason since 2006 with an 8-7 win over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday.
UM (38-21) stays alive to face host Florida at 6:30 p.m. tonight as the Hurricanes need a win to force a championship game on Monday.
"We made mistakes today and Miami got a terrific pitching performance," said JU head coach Terry Alexander. "Our pitching held them down and gave us a chance to build a lead but when you give up three unearned errors, it's tough to bounce back. Defense has gotten us to this point in the second half of the year but today it cost us."
Sophomore Sean Green (3-3) was tagged with the loss despite allowing three unearned runs on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 4.1 innings. Senior Billy Schlee struck out four batters in 3.1 innings of relief to end his Dolphin career. Junior Kyle Kriech also added an inning of scoreless relief.
David Guitierrez (4-6) got the win after scattering seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts in a complete game shutout.
Senior left fielder Kyle Fleming led the Dolphin offense by going 2-for-4 in his final game. Senior catcher Jeremy Gillan finished 1-for-4 to end the season batting .400 and became the first Dolphin to do so since Chad Hauseman in 2001. Senior right fielder Thomas Myers also finished 1-for-4 in his final game.
Seniors Garrett Dunlap, Dan Maier, Joey Wedner and Brad Simmons also appeared in their final game in a Dolphin uniform.
Harold Martinez led the Hurricanes by going 2-for-3 with double and an RBI.
