GAINESVILLE, Fla. - For the fourth time this season, the University of North Florida baseball team has slain a giant.
UNF (16-12) picked up its fourth win over a ranked opponent this season with its 11-10 extra inning win over No. 13 Florida on Wednesday night at McKethan Stadium. It was the highest ranked Division I opponent UNF has ever defeated. The Ospreys were able to battle back after relinquishing a four-run lead and falling behind 10-9 in the top of the ninth.
Senior Chad Knight picked up the game-winning RBI in the top of the 10th when his looping single drove home sophomore Michael Gropper. He also scored the game-tying run in the top of the ninth. Knight finished with a career-high five hits and a run scored.
Junior closer Tyler Stohr took his place on the mound in the bottom of the 10th and put a clamp on the Gators to pick up his seventh save of the season, which would have him tied for fifth in the nation. Junior RHP Ty Pryor improved his record to 3-3 after coming on in relief in the bottom of the seventh and keeping UNF in position to win. Pryor allowed just one hit in three innings of work and struck out four.
Florida Gulf Coast 6, No. 25 UCF 4
ORLANDO, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team picked up its first win over a ranked opponent with a 6-4 win at UCF on Wednesday night. The Eagles improve to 23-7 while UCF falls to 22-8.
The Eagles got on the board in the first as back to back singles by Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) and Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) scored Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.). The Eagles put up four runs in the top of the third with a bases clearing double by starting pitcher Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.). Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled to bring home Coleman for a 5-0 Eagle lead. The Knights plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth after three straight singles.
FGCU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) extended his hitting streak to 16 games and scored on an RBI single by Borrell. The Knights rallied scoring three in the bottom of the ninth, however the Eagles would leave with the 6-4 win.
Coleman picked up the win, working 8.0 innings to move to 3-2 on the year. He allowed eight hits and struck out eight batters while allowing one run. He was also 1-4 with a double and three RBI at the plate. Borrell was also 2-5 with a pair of RBI. Every FGCU batter recorded at least one hit in the contest.
