FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU baseball team completed a three-game sweep to improve to 18-5 overall and 10-2 in the Atlantic Sun. With the series sweep, the Eagles now have a two-game lead in the conference. The Bears fall to 9-13 overall and 6-6 in the A-Sun.
FGCU put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out rally. Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) began the rally. After a single and stolen base by Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.), Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) doubled to plate the two runs.
Mercer put up a pair of runs in the top-half of the fourth inning on a two RBI single by John Dortch. The Eagles responded with three of their own in the bottom of the frame. Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off with a single and after a sacrifice bunt and hit batsman, four other batters would follow with singles to score three runs.
The Bears would add a run off of a solo homerun by Tyler Brown and add two more in the top of the eighth inning. FGCU would answer again with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.
Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off the inning with a single and after a pair of walks, D.J. Bissell (Longwood, Fla.) singled to put the Eagles up 6-5. Casey Coleman tacked on two more runs with a single that plated a pair of runners to put the Eagles up 8-5.
