Belmont
* Belmont scored a season high 19 hits in its 14-0 victory over Campbell on
May 9.
* The Bruins have now won four consecutive Atlantic Sun conference
series for the first time in school history. The Bruins won all three games
against Stetson from Apr. 11-13, won two out of three at ETSU from Apr. 18-20,
won two out of three game against USC Upstate from Apr. 25-26 and finally won
two out of three games against Campbell this past weekend.
* Junior Carlo Testa (Tallmadge, Ohio) pitched the first shutout
of his career in Belmont's 14-0 victory over Campbell on May 9. This was his
second complete game of the season and his career. The Bruins are now 8-3 in
contests Testa's starts this season.
Campbell
* Campbell saw its Atlantic Sun tournament hopes slip
a little further away last week after winning just one game against Belmont
over the weekend. Belmont took game one 14-0, but Campbell bounced back nicely
and earned a 6-5 win in game two to keep hopes of a series victory alive. Campbell
committed three errors and walked 11 batters in game three as Belmont earned
its third consecutive series victory over Campbell.
* Brandon Scott had another solid weekend as he was a home run
short of the cycle in game three. Scott, who is Campbell's all-time leader in
stolen bases, swiped two bags over the weekend and is just one shy of tying
and two short of breaking Campbell's single season record.
* Ryan Hamme, who leads the team with 20 multi-hit performances,
was 5-for-12 with two doubles, a home run and an RBI over the week. Hamme is
one of just two players to start all 51 games this season. In his first weekend
start of his career, Hamme went a career high seven innings and picked up a
win in game two against Belmont.
* Campbell has tallied 93 stolen bases this season, which is
just 11 short of 2001's record of 104. Catcher Stephen Parsons stole three bases
in a game over the weekend, which is the second most for a Campbell member this
season and is his career high in a game.
* Campbell will face Duke on Tuesday (May 13) before hosting
the Lipscomb Bisons on Thursday (May 15) and Friday (May 16) for the final A-Sun
games of the year.
Florida
Gulf Coast * FGCU won the Atlantic
Sun Championship with weekend sweep of ETSU. The Eagles also now have their
sights set on matching FIU's record for most conference wins in a single season.
In 1995, the Panthers went 27-3 in the league, to set the record. FGCU's 24
wins are the most for any current conference member and the fourth most in A-Sun
history.
* FGCU is playing its best baseball this season. The Eagles
have won 11 of 12 including a pair of sweeps in league play. Senior OF Vinnie
Scarduzio has been a big part of that. The senior outfielder is on a seven game
hitting streak and has raised his average nearly 50 points and has 10 RBI and
scored nine runs over that time.
* Last week FGCU beat in-state rival FAU 7-5 in 11 innings to
improve to 6-2 in games that go to extra innings. A-Sun Player of the Year candidate
Jason Peacock is a huge part of that success. He hit a homer in the 11th to
put the Eagles up 7-5 and increased his batting average to .647 (11-17) in the
9th inning or later. He also has seven RBI and a slugging percentage of .941.
Gardner-Webb
* Gardner-Webb is 21-1 this season when scoring nine
runs or more in a game.
* GWU is 22-2 when leading after the eighth inning in 2008,
despite having only seven saves as a team.
* Brock Miller has been successful stealing bases 36 times in
his last 37 attempts - dating back to last season.
* Daniel Cooke moved into ninth on the A-Sun career stolen base
list over the weekend, and now has 61 bags in three seasons.
* With 11 steals in three games vs. Norfolk State, GWU reached
the 100-steal plateau for the second season in a row. The 'Dogs have swiped
288 bases in the last three seasons.
* GWU is six home runs shy of tying the current school record
for a single season (55 in 2000).
* The 'Dogs have reached the 100-double mark for just the second
time as a Division I member, with six men belting at least 10. Eight players
have at least eight doubles for GWU this season.
* Gardner-Webb's Brock Miller is on pace to become the team's
first .400 hitter since the 2000 season, when GWU advanced to the Division II
World Series. Miller is currently batting .419 and is batting away at a .408
clip in league play.
* GWU slugger Bubbie Spake has the fourth-best RBI total for
a single-season in school history - with 56 runs batted in so far in 2008. His
home run total (12) is fifth-best in GWU history.
* GWU ranks fifth nationally with 605 hits in 2008, and are
70 hits shy of the school's single-season record (2000, 65 games). GWU is on
pace to shatter the school-record for hits per game - averaging an eye-popping
11.8 per contest so far this season.
* GWU's .474 team slugging percentage is the highest since the
program's move to Division I play in 2001.
* Southpaws Wes Cogdill (4-1) and Ryan Maxa (4-2) have combined
for eight wins this season in relief. The duo also has one save apiece, giving
them a direct link in 10 of GWU's 25 wins in 2008.
Jacksonville
* The 17-year monkey finally came off the Dolphins' backs
as junior catcher Brad Simmons went 3-for-3 with a home run and a career-high
four RBI to lead the JU baseball team to a 7-6 shocker over No. 3 Florida State
on May 7 at Dick Howser Stadium. JU, which last won at Howser Stadium with a
7-4 decision on April 29, 1991, has now defeated the Seminoles in back-to-back
season for the first time since 1993-94. The win also gave the Dolphins their
third win over a ranked opponent this season (No. 25 UCF, No. 17 Florida) and
back-to-back seasons with victories over the Gators and Seminoles.
* Sophomore Glenn Witkowski made his second start on the weekend
and it was a doozy. Unfortunately, the offense and defense couldn't pick him
up in the best start of his young career. In a 3-1 loss to Dallas Baptist on
May 9, Witkowski allowed three unearned runs and scattered five hits in a career-best
7.2 innings. Included in his effort was a career-high tying five strikeouts
and no walks while retiring 17 consecutive batters during the contest.
Kennesaw
State
* Kennesaw State moved into a tie for second in the A-Sun
with Lipscomb after taking two of three from North Florida over the weekend.
* Ric Bishop's two-run homer in the eighth inning proved to
be the difference in game one of the series. It was Bishop's eighth blast of
the year. He now has 32 RBIs in A-Sun games.
* Chad Jenkins pitched eight innings to earn the win in game
two of the set. Jenkins gave up two runs on seven hits with no walks and six
K's.
* The Owls will face Jacksonville State this Tuesday before
wrapping up the season at Jacksonville on Thursday and Friday.
Mercer
* On Monday, the Mercer baseball
squad avenged an early season loss to in-state rival Georgia Southern, throwing
ten arms and tallying eight hits en route to a 6-4 victory. Matt Crawford tallied
two doubles and Michael Langley and Tyler Brown each went yard to lead the Bears
from the plate. David Harden got the win from the hill.
* The Bears took two out of three at A-Sun foe Lipscomb this
past weekend. In game one, the Bears used a four-run sixth inning to take a
lead they would not relinquish, grabbing the 8-3 win. Mike Armstrong, Casey
Stuart and Steve Karwatt each tallied two hits in the victory and David Harden
earned the win from the hill, fanning six in the first five innings. The Bears
fell, 4-1, in a pitcher's duel in game two. The Bisons out-hit the Bears 11-8,
with John Dortch tallying three hits and scoring the Bears' lone run. In the
final game, Mercer used seven runs in the top of the eighth to grab the series
with a 14-9 win. Michael Langley went four-for-six from the plate while Joe
Winker added two hits and four RBI. Lath Guyer grabbed the win.
USC
Upstate
* USC Upstate has come-from-behind
to win 15 of their 23 games this season.
* After starting the year in a 1-for-25 slump, freshman Keith
Bisgounis has hit .343 (36-for-105) with 22 runs and 19 RBIs.
* Junior Eric Guillen is one of 25 players in school history
to record 50 hits in two seasons in his career.
* Senior Andrew Runion is hitting .396 (19-for-48) with 10 runs
and 10 RBIs during his current 12-game hitting streak, which ties a team season-high.
* Runion became one of 11 players in school history to record
75 hits in a season on Saturday at Stetson. He is eighth in school history with
195 career hits.
* Freshman A.J. Clark is hitting .500 (7-for-14) with six RBIs
in his last four games, including a 4-for-5 game with three RBIs on Sunday against
Stetson.
* Junior Phillip Myers has a 2-0 record and 2.91 ERA in his
last nine appearances. He has tossed 21.2 innings and struck out 16 in that
span.
* Junior Justin Hayes' four saves are tied for sixth in the
Atlantic Sun and his seven career saves are tied for sixth in school history.
Stetson * Stetson rebounded from a Friday night loss to
sweep a Saturday doubleheader and take the A-Sun series from USC Upstate in
DeLand. After leading the game early, Stetson fell 5-4 Friday night in the first
game. Starter Nick Pugliese pitched well giving up just three runs on 10 hits
and striking out seven over seven complete innings. David Burns gave up two
runs and suffered the loss dropping to 0-2 on the season.
* Saturday afternoon the Hatters struck early and never looked
back for a 10-4 victory in the first game of the doubleheader. Andy Mauldin
fired his second complete game of the season and struck out two batters en route
to the win. He is now tied for the league lead in victories with seven (7-1).
The second game was a back-and-forth battle with the Hatters scoring four runs
in the bottom of the 8th inning and coming out on the winning side of a 12-10
game. Robbie Elsemiller returned to the mound to close the door in the 9th and
earn his 6th save of the season. He is now 2nd in the A-Sun in that category.
* Justin Bass led the way offensively in the series batting
.538 with a double and his 10th and 11th home runs of the season. Casey Frawley
and Robert Crews both hit .500 and Jeremy Cruz was not far behind at .467 with
a home run. As a team Stetson batted .411 with six doubles, one triple and four
home runs in the series. On the season Stetson has raised its team batting average
to .303.
* A check of the A-Sun Leaders Summary finds three Hatters in
the top four. Justin Bass is second at .398, Jeremy Cruz is third at .394, and
Robert Crews is fourth at .380. Bass leads the conference in hits with 84, runs
scored with 57, total bases with 141, and is second in doubles with 22.
* The Hatters now control their own destiny as far as reaching
the A-Sun tournament set for May 21-24 in DeLand. If Stetson can win 2-of-3
next week at ETSU it will secure a spot. With fewer than two wins Stetson will
need some help from Kennesaw State (vs. Jacksonville), or Lipscomb (vs. Campbell).
