A-Sun Rack up Florida Collegiate Summer League Awards

MAITLAND, Fla.- The board of directors for the Florida Collegiate Summer League has announced the award winners for the 2007 regular season. The league has awarded a Most Valuable Player, a Cy Young, a Sportsmanship and a Pitcher in Relief Award, while each team has a Most Valuable Player, a Cy Young and a Sportsmanship Award winner.
2007 League Award Winners
Most Valuable Player: Tyler McCarty (Mercer)
Tyler McCarty of the Winter Springs Cudas finished the 2007 FCSL season being named this year’s league MVP. McCarty started every game he played for the Cudas and helped lead the team to a 23-12 season. He played mostly second base throughout the season, but stepped up at the end when the team needed him to play shortstop. McCarty is a solid player and can always be counted on to come up with big plays. On July 21, 2007, he brought in the winning run giving the Cudas a 3-2 lead over Winter Park with a hit down the left field line.
McCarty leads the league and the Cudas statistically. McCarty is ranked third overall and second on the Cudas with a .326 batting average. He leads the league in hits with 42, which is a little over one hit a game. McCarty also leads the league with 25 RBIs in 35 games and leads the Cudas in runs scored with 24. He has eight doubles on the season and leads the team with 12 stolen bases in 14 attempts.
Best Pitcher in Relief: Blake Marsocci (Stetson)
Marsocci was the Lightning closer and was a fan favorite in the ninth inning. He set a league record for saves with nine, beating the old record by five. In his league-leading 18 appearances, he allowed only six earned runs and gave up only two earned runs in his last 17 appearances. He earned the third highest team ERA with 1.91 and received a 2-1 record as closer, earning the two wins by shutting down opponents in the top of the ninth and winning with walk-off singles. He allowed only five walks and did not pitch a walk until 13 games into the season. He gave up just 23 hits and was fifth in the league with 39 strikeouts.
2007 Team Award Winners
Leesburg Lightning
Most Valuable Player: Jason Peacock (Florida Gulf Coast)
Peacock started in 29 of the 31 games that the Lightning played. He finished seventh in the league with a .296 batting average, eighth in hits with 29, sixth in doubles with six and one triple on the season. Peacock played first base for Leesburg and hit clean up for the majority of the season. He had a team-leading 37 total bases, team high 13 RBIs and finished seventh in the league with 18 walks. At first base he committed only four errors and was a vital part of the Lightning defense. Peacock also brought a strong .378 slugging percentage and a .430 on base percentage. Peacock was also a member of the red All-Star team under Lightning head coach Josh Holt.
Peacock added to his list of honors when was named Playoff MVP in the FCSL after leading the Leesburg Lightning to a 6-0 win in the championship game. Peacock went 3-for-4 in the championship game with three RBI.
His one-out three-run homer in the ninth inning on the previous day sent the Lightning to the championship game.
Peacock drove in the first run of the game with a double to put Leesburg up 1-0. Later in the game, he laced a single to right center with the bases loaded, giving the Lightning a 4-0 lead.
Cy Young: Jonathan Turner (UNF)
Turner finished with a league leading ERA of 1.07 in the 33 2/3 innings that he pitched. Turner was also a member of the All-Star blue team and pitched one inning in the game. Turner was second in the league with seven starts and finished fourth in the league allowing a low .216 opponent batting average. He finished the season 2-0 with eight appearances, allowing only 25 hits, four earned runs and 23 strikeouts in the 116 batters he faced. He also struck out consecutive batters five times this season and struck out three in a row twice.
Winter Springs Cudas
Cy Young: David Burns (Stetson)
Left-hand reliever, David Burns, receives this year’s Cy Young Award for the Winter Springs Cudas. Burns made 17 appearances, which is the most of any Cuda, and finished the regular season with a 1.44 ERA. He leads the league in wins with a 5-1 record and represented the Blue Team in the FCSL All-Star game. Burns has allowed 26 hits in 31.1 innings pitched with seven runs scoring and only five being earned. He had 12 walks and 29 strikeouts in the regular season. Throughout the season, the Cudas have always been able to count on Burns to come in and have a solid performance. On July 27, 2007, Burns made appearances in both games of the doubleheader against Altamonte Springs and helped secure a first place Cuda finish in the regular season.
