MACON, Ga. – Mercer's DJ Johnson and Belmont's Matt Hamann won the Atlantic Sun Conference Baseball weekly honors, announced Monday by the league office. Johnson helped Mercer to a 4-0 record on the week with a sweep of USC Upstate and a 4-3 win over Georgia Tech, while Hamann pitched a complete game shutout against the Bisons.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
DJ Johnson, Mercer (2B – So. – Adel, Ga.)
- First Career A-Sun Player of the Week award
- Led the Bears to a win over Georgia Tech, 4-3
- Went 12-for-17 (.706) at the plate with five runs scored and six RBI
- Had a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the 14th inning to beat USC Upstate
- Helped Mercer to a 4-0 week with 12 hits, five runs scored and two doubles
OTHER NOMINEES:
- Matt Beaty (IF, Belmont) - Batted .429 with a triple and two home runs
- Ryan Roberson (1B, North Florida) - Drove in a team-high five RBI on the weekend
- Adam Brett Walker II (1B/OF, Jacksonville) - In the UNF series, he tallied four runs, two RBI, two stolen bases and a homer
- Will Howard (OF, Kennesaw State) - Batted .400 in four games this week with one double, triple and two RBI
PITCHER OF THE WEEK:
Matt Hamann, Belmont (SP – Sr. – Northbrook, Ill. – Sport Administration)
- Sixth Career A-Sun Pitcher of the Week; third this season
- Recorded his fifth complete game of the year with a 0.00 ERA
- The complete game was a four-hit shutout of Lipscomb to give the Bruins the No. 1 seed
- Struck out a career best 10 batters in the win over the Bisons
- Held opponents to a .133 batting average.
OTHER NOMINEES:
- Kyle Westwood (P, North Florida) - Threw his team-leading fourth complete game of the season
- Steve Eagerton (P, Jacksonville) - Allowed only one hit through 4.2 innings against UNF
- Ricky Knapp (RHP, FGCU) - Allowed two runs on 10 hits while recording six strikeouts and no walks against Stetson.
- Josh Carr (P, Kennesaw State) - Won a conference leading ninth game on Thursday against ETSU
