Olympic Dream Ends in Prelims for Harvey and Lundy
Date Posted: 7/1/2008
EUGENE, Ore. - Jacksonville's Natasha Harvey and Shaquania Lundy placed 20th and 25th, respectively, in the long jump preliminaries at the 2008 US Olympic Team Trials at Eugene's Hayward Field. Only the top 12 performers advance to the finals.
Harvey struggled to find her steps early, scratching on her first two attempts. She recorded her first jump in her third and final attempt, posting a leap of 19-9 1/2 (6.03m). The NCAA All-American came up shy of her qualifying effort of 21-8 (6.60m), which would have allowed her to advance to the finals with a fourth place finish.
Like Harvey, Lundy also had some issues off the board, scratching on her second attempt. She did record two jumps, the best of which came in her final attempt of 19-1 1/4 (5.82m). Lundy's qualifying distance of 21-5 (6.52m) would have been good enough for sixth place and a trip to the finals.
Despite missing out on a chance to represent the USA in Beijing, Harvey still gets an opportunity to wear the red, white and blue this summer. She now looks forward to competing in the long jump at the 2008 North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association Under 23 Track and Field Championships held in Toluca, Mexico from July 18-20. Lundy is the team's first alternate.
